Copernicus House consists of two Gothic townhouses in the old town of Toruń, a branch of the local museum. It is believed that Nicolaus Copernicus spent his childhood in one of them. The buildings went up at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries as so-called granary-houses — a type of Hanseatic merchant house combining living quarters with a goods store.
Despite numerous rebuildings and reconstructions, original features have survived, among them painted tracery decoration. The interiors, however, are filled with a modern exhibition: augmented reality, a smartphone app, visual projections and holograms, plus a screening in a 4D cinema. The display shows life in a medieval townhouse and explains the astronomer's achievements.
The multimedia format works well with children and on rainy days, and the building is wheelchair accessible. It stands within the UNESCO-listed old town, so a visit is easy to combine with the Old Town Hall, the Leaning Tower and a walk along the Vistula boulevard.
