Lipowa 1, Hajnówka
The Museum of Blacksmithing and Locksmithing in Hajnówka is run by Stanisław Mierzwiński, who set it up in the family forge founded in 1927. It is a private collection built over generations and at the same time a still-working shop rather than a dead display. The place lies on the edge of the Białowieża Forest, in a town long tied to timber and craft.
The collection numbers nearly six hundred items: blacksmith's tools, farm machines, models of furnaces, sets of horseshoes, even special shoes for horses walking on marshland and slag from prehistoric smelting sites. A miniature ancient smelting furnace stands in the yard. Most of the objects are keepsakes from the owner's grandparents and great-grandparents, some are on loan from other museums.
Demonstrations of forging red-hot iron take place here, along with workshops and museum lessons, which makes the visit work well with children. The museum cooperates with archaeological institutions in Warsaw and Pruszków. Hajnówka is a natural stop on the way to Białowieża.
