The Natural History Museum of the Institute of Systematics and Evolution of Animals of the Polish Academy of Sciences stands on św. Sebastiana Street in Cracow's Old Town. It is the largest institution of its kind in Poland, combining scientific collections with a living display of exotic animals. The whole visit takes place indoors, so the weather makes no difference.
The aquariums hold piranhas, moray eels, sturgeons, clownfish, seahorses and a bamboo shark. Terrariums are home to monitor lizards, other lizards, turtles, chameleons and tropical frogs, while a separate room is devoted to venomous animals, including rattlesnakes and the Mexican beaded lizard. Cotton-top tamarins, among the smallest monkeys in the world, attract particular attention.
Remains of prehistoric animals, among them a woolly rhinoceros and a mammoth skull, impress children and adults alike. Groups can book nature lessons on site or field classes around Cracow. The museum lies in the very centre, where stopping with a large vehicle is difficult — it is easier to park further out and walk in.
