Kolegiaty 2, Gniezno
The Archdiocesan Museum in Gniezno stands on Lech Hill, right beside the cathedral, in a place regarded as the cradle of Polish statehood. It gathers objects of religious worship from across the archdiocese and at the same time serves as the cathedral treasury. The items on display date from the 10th to the 18th century.
Among the most valuable exhibits are the chalices of St Adalbert, of Dobrawa and the Royal Chalice, along with the reliquaries of St Ursula, St Barbara, St Gereon and Jakub of Sienno. The collection also holds Romanesque and Gothic wooden sculpture, early printed books, paintings including canvases by Jacek Malczewski, as well as coffin portraits, medals, coins, liturgical textiles and mementoes of the Primates of Poland.
The Gniezno treasury is often named right after the Wawel treasury as one of the richest in the country. A visit takes about an hour and naturally combines with the cathedral, home to the famous Gniezno Doors. The whole hill is explored on foot, together with a walk through the old part of town.
