Kościuszki 12, Wieś Russów
The manor house in Russów near Kalisz is where Maria Dąbrowska, author of „Nights and Days”, was born and spent her childhood. Today it operates as a branch of the Regional Museum of the Kalisz Land and combines mementoes of the writer with an ethnographic display of the region. The single-storey manor is surrounded by an old garden, and the neighbourhood entered the novel in its descriptions of a country estate.
The interiors have been reconstructed to match the years of the writer's childhood: Maria's room, her father's study, the drawing room, a bedroom and the manor kitchen. Beside the house stands a rebuilt nineteenth-century peasant farmstead, made up of buildings moved here from villages around Kalisz together with their furnishings and everyday tools.
A visit takes about an hour and works well with children, especially during the museum lessons and workshops held on site. Russów lies a dozen or so kilometres south of Kalisz, so the trip is easy to combine with sightseeing in the city.
