Wilson Shaft Gallery occupies the historic buildings of the former „Wieczorek” coal mine in the Janów district of Katowice, on Oswobodzenia Street. The brick industrial halls were converted into an exhibition space of some 2,500 square metres — the largest private art gallery in Poland. The site belongs to the Industrial Monuments Route of the Silesian Voivodeship.
Paintings, sculptures and installations by contemporary artists are shown here, among them Andrzej Urbanowicz and Andrzej Tobis, alongside foreign names. The gallery consistently promotes newcomers, and its best-known event is the Art Naif Festiwal, devoted to self-taught art from around the world.
Besides exhibitions, the halls host concerts, performances, fashion shows and photo sessions, so the programme changes from week to week. Admission to the exhibitions is free, the space is wheelchair accessible, and the raw interiors of the mine buildings are an attraction in themselves.
