Kościeliska 18, Zakopane
Willa Koliba stands on Kościeliska Street, the oldest street in Zakopane, among historic houses and farmsteads. It is the first building erected to a design by Stanisław Witkiewicz in the Zakopane style, and today a branch of the Tytus Chałubiński Tatra Museum operating as the Museum of the Zakopane Style.
Visitors walk through original interiors: the dining room, drawing room, bedroom, the owner's room and the servant's room. The furniture with its distinctive Podhale ornament draws the eye, designed in harmony with the shape and detail of the building. The highlanders' room houses the ethnographic collection of Zygmunt Gnatowski, the villa's first owner.
The place appeals to anyone interested in timber architecture, design and the search for a Polish national style. The exhibition explains where the Zakopane style came from and how it spread across Podhale. A visit takes about an hour, so it combines easily with a walk along Kościeliska.
