The Jewish Museum and Synagogue in Oświęcim tell the story of the community that lived here from the 16th century and made up a large share of the town's inhabitants before the war. The town's largest synagogue was destroyed during the war and only an open square remains on its site; the exhibition was arranged nearby, in the buildings of the Jewish Centre, beside the surviving prayer house.
The collection consists of photographs, documents, everyday objects and Judaica found during archaeological work, supplemented by multimedia presentations recounting the fates of individual residents. The visit also includes the interior of the synagogue, which still serves for prayer.
Before your visit it is worth downloading the “Oszpicin” app, a guide to the museum and to the Jewish history of the town, available in Polish, English, German and Hebrew. The centre also runs workshops for children, students and teachers, and cultural events.
