Lusatian Culture Archaeological Reserve in Częstochowa

A burial ground almost three thousand years old

The Lusatian Culture Archaeological Reserve in Częstochowa is a branch of the Częstochowa Museum in the Raków district. It protects part of a cemetery discovered in 1955 during archaeological work and opened to visitors inside a pavilion built directly over the site.

What to see

The heart of the exhibition „Z mroku dziejów. Kultura łużycka” (Out of the Dark Ages. The Lusatian Culture) are graves preserved where they were found — you see them exactly as the archaeologists uncovered them. Display cases add ceramic bowls, pots and cups, tools and ornaments of iron and bronze, plus weapons: iron spearheads and a bronze arrowhead. Research reconstructed the appearance of the people buried here, their funeral customs and even the illnesses they suffered.

Good to know

The cemetery was in use between 750 and 550 BC. The whole display is under a roof, so it works in any weather, and the pavilion is adapted for wheelchair users.
