Nowogród
The Kurpie Open-Air Museum in Nowogród stands on a bluff above the Narew river in the Łomża district. It was founded in 1927 by the ethnographer and social activist Adam Chętnik and ranks among the two oldest open-air museums in the country. Its pre-war collection of over three thousand exhibits was almost entirely destroyed during the war.
Today the grounds cover about 4.5 hectares and hold 34 examples of wooden architecture from the Kurpie Green Forest: a cottage from Łyse, a manor from Brzózki, a forester’s lodge from Zawodzie, a granary from Cięćko, a smithy from Zalas, a cowshed from Wyk and a forest beekeeping yard. The interiors are furnished with old tools and household items, and the manor houses the exhibition „Adam Chętnik. His Life and Work”.
Impressive trees grow on the site — a 700-year-old oak and a 500-year-old pine. Nowogród itself is a good base for exploring the Kurpie region and the Narew valley.
