Mickiewicza 45, Bielsk Podlaski
The Museum of Both Nations in Bielsk Podlaski is a branch of the Podlasie Museum in Białystok and occupies a former late Baroque town hall on Mickiewicza Street. The building was founded by Izabela Branicka and is regarded as one of the finest examples of late Baroque architecture in this part of Poland.
The original purpose of the house has never been firmly established. The name town hall suggests a seat of municipal authorities, yet in the 19th century it housed a district court, a guardhouse and shops, and in the 1950s and 1960s municipal offices, a notary bureau and the public library. It was handed over for museum use in 1984.
The ethnographic exhibition is devoted to the ritual folk towels typical of Podlasie. Multimedia, an audio guide and a magnetic puzzle explain the growing and processing of flax and the symbolism of the embroidery. The display is approachable for children and the interiors are wheelchair accessible.
