A wooden villa at the foot of the Tatras

The museum occupies Villa Atma on Kasprusie Street in Zakopane, a few minutes' walk from Krupówki. The wooden house in the Zakopane style was, between 1930 and 1935, the home of Karol Szymanowski, one of Poland's most important twentieth-century composers. It is today the only place in the country devoted entirely to him.

The exhibition

The rooms are arranged to convey the atmosphere of the composer's home. The largest group of exhibits are photographs: Szymanowski with his family, at work, travelling and at concerts. Alongside them are personal belongings, souvenirs from trips abroad and material documenting the creation of “Harnasie”, the Fourth Symphony (Symphonie concertante) and the Second Violin Concerto — works written in this very house. Three portraits of the composer by Witkacy hang in the former bedroom.

Music and visiting

Atma is not a silent museum — one of its rooms serves as a concert hall hosting musicians from all over the world. A visit takes about an hour and combines easily with a walk through central Zakopane.
