The Kossak family home

The Zofia Kossak-Szatkowska Museum stands in Górki Wielkie in Cieszyn Silesia, at the edge of the Silesian Beskids and close to Brenna. It occupies the former gardener's house; the manor where the writer spent her childhood was destroyed during the war and survives only as a ruin in the park. Zofia Kossak returned to the family estate after the Second World War.

The exhibition

The interiors were opened to visitors by the writer's husband after her death, which is why the arrangement still carries the mood of the period. On show are her working desk, manuscripts, letters, photographs and family deposits, together with books from the interwar decades. Among the most valuable pieces are paintings by Juliusz and Wojciech Kossak, Witkacy, Leon Wyczółkowski and Czesław Kuryatto.

The surroundings

A visit pairs well with a walk through the park around the museum and a trip into the nearby valleys of Brenna or Wisła. Górki Wielkie lie on the road from Cieszyn towards Skoczów, so the museum fits easily into a drive across the region.
