Michałowicka 32, Jelenia Góra
The Municipal Museum Gerhart Hauptmann House stands in Jagniątków, a hillside district of Jelenia Góra, in a substantial villa that looks like a small castle. The house belonged to the German writer Gerhart Hauptmann, winner of the 1912 Nobel Prize in Literature, who sought quiet here away from the city.
Visitors have seven exhibition rooms devoted to the writer's life and working methods. On display are first editions of his books, fragments of correspondence, documents and personal objects, along with mementoes of the guests he received — artists and intellectuals from the area and from Berlin. One highlight is an interactive biography with screenings of archive films and recordings in which the laureate reads his own texts.
An extensive park surrounds the villa, and the area opens up views towards the Karkonosze. The museum runs temporary exhibitions, openings and workshops for children and adults. Jagniątków is also a convenient starting point for trails towards Szrenica and the Śnieżne Kotły cirques.
