Chochołów 75, Wieś Chochołów
Zagroda Bafiów is a 19th-century highlander cottage in Chochołów, one of the best preserved in a village famous for its wooden architecture. The name comes from the family of Jan Bafia, a wealthy farmer who owned the building. Today it is a branch of the Tatra Museum in Zakopane and a natural stop on the way from Zakopane towards the Chochołowska Valley.
The interior keeps the traditional layout of a Podhale cottage: hallway, black room, white room, chamber and the loft above it. The display shows the everyday life of its inhabitants through farm tools, furniture, pottery and paintings on glass. The carpentry details are worth a closer look: the way the logs are joined and the carving on corners and shutters.
The homestead also houses the Museum of the Chochołów Uprising of 1846, one of the best known highlander revolts against Austrian rule. The exhibition covers the course of the rising, the people involved and its consequences, supported by literary and scholarly texts on the subject.
