The Museum of Toys and Play occupies a building on Plac Wolności in the centre of Kielce and holds one of the largest toy collections in Poland. The exhibits range from the 18th century to the communist era and are arranged as a story about the childhood of successive generations. The museum is within walking distance of the market square and Sienkiewicza street.
The displays lead through early toy workshops, industrial production and the toy trade of past eras. A separate section is devoted to props and figures from Polish animated films — Bolek and Lolek, Reksio, Pomysłowy Dobromir, Plastuś and the Moomins. The „Zabawajki” exhibition presents folk toy-making traditions from the Myślenice, Żywiec, Rzeszów and Kielce areas.
Few places work equally well for children and adults: the young look at the toys, the older recognise objects from their own childhood. The visit takes place entirely indoors, which makes it a good idea for a rainy day while travelling through the Świętokrzyskie Mountains.
