The Main Building of the District Museum in Nowy Sącz occupies a historic bank house of 1912, the former Austro-Hungarian Bank on Jagiellońska street. It is the headquarters of an institution that also runs an open-air museum and other branches in the region. The market square and the castle ruins above the Dunajec are a short walk away.
The permanent exhibition tells the story of the town between 1867 and 1945: the Galician autonomy, both world wars and the interwar years seen through the eyes of its inhabitants. The second strand is the work of Bolesław Barbacki, a painter and portraitist from the Nowy Sącz region, shown together with his preserved studio and tools.
The building has a temporary exhibition hall also used for openings, concerts and meetings, so the programme changes through the year. The museum runs educational sessions, workshops, learning games and competitions for children and school groups. The visit is entirely indoors and does not depend on the weather.
