Tadeusza Czackiego 9, Bochnia
The Arthropoda Butterfly Museum in Bochnia holds the largest butterfly display in Poland — around 4,500 specimens from every zoogeographic region. The collection took nearly four decades to build and is the work of local collectors Jacek and Filip Kobiela. Some specimens come from expeditions to South and Central America and Africa, others were acquired from entomologists and butterfly farms.
The exhibition goes beyond cases of colourful wings: it explains insect classification, warning coloration and mimicry, and adaptation to different habitats. Alongside butterflies there are other arthropods — mantises, cicadas, beetles, spiders and scorpions, and even fossil trilobites. A large insect-themed mural covers the wall in front of the building.
A good stop for families with children and a sensible plan for a rainy day. The museum runs classes and workshops on the world of insects. A visit takes about an hour and combines easily with the Bochnia salt mine.
