The Museum of Writing and Printing stands in Grębocin near Toruń, in a Gothic building whose facade and interiors are a monument in themselves. The holdings cover three related fields: the history of writing materials, papermaking and printing, with exhibits from Europe and Asia. The collection of printing presses stands out and is unique in Poland.
The paper section shows papers from around the world, a replica of a seventeenth-century paper-forming station and an Asian vat used for making paper by hand. The printing section presents craft workshops with wooden and lead type and printing matrices, along with a reprint of a page from Copernicus and a facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible.
The writing section gathers slate and wax tablets, styluses, papyrus and parchment, glass inkwells and a reconstructed medieval scriptorium. The museum's strength lies in hands-on workshops for children, teenagers and adults. An hour is enough for a visit.
