The Polish Aviation Museum in Cracow operates on the grounds of the former Rakowice-Czyżyny airfield, used first by Austro-Hungarian and later by Polish aviation. After the airport was closed down in the 1960s, an exhibition of aviation equipment was arranged here, and the present institution grew out of it.
The display is divided into several thematic sections leading through the history of aviation, the construction of aeroplanes and gliders, and engines. The aircraft are shown both in halls and across a vast outdoor area, where large military machines and helicopters are lined up.
The museum runs educational classes for children and young people, devoted among others to the squadrons that took part in the Battle of Britain, as well as model-making workshops and meetings for students. Open spaces and the outdoor display make a visit work well with small children and a pushchair too.
