Pl. B. Joselewicza 1, Przemyśl
The National Museum of the Przemyśl Region occupies a modern building on Berek Joselewicz Square, raised on the site of the former Jewish quarter. Its architecture earned a nomination for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2009. Inside are displays devoted to the history of the town, its inhabitants and this borderland of cultures.
The route runs from the early Middle Ages — tools, crafts and the daily life of past residents — to the sacred art of two nations, Polish and Ukrainian, arranged chronologically so that the development of both traditions can be compared. A separate exhibition recalls the Jewish community of Przemyśl, before the war one of the largest in the town.
An important part of the display tells the story of Przemyśl Fortress, which raised the town to the rank of a major centre in Galicia. The exhibition covers the stages of construction, garrison life and the course of the fighting. The museum runs lessons and workshops, and the building is wheelchair accessible.
