Wieś Bobrza
The ruins of the blast furnace plant in Bobrza, a dozen or so kilometres north-west of Kielce, are the remains of one of the most ambitious projects of the Old Polish Industrial Region. According to the plans of Stanisław Staszic, the works here were to smelt about 5,100 tonnes of iron a year — as much as all Polish ironworks produced together at the time.
Construction was never completed: a flood and the outbreak of the November Uprising intervened. A retaining wall, a charcoal store, a pond, an upper canal, a hall and a workers' settlement were built. Later the buildings served a nail works and blacksmiths' and weavers' workshops. What can be seen today is chiefly the massive retaining wall and the ruined charcoal store.
The site is open and free of charge, and the remains are listed as a historic monument. The scale of the stone wall is impressive from close up, and around it stretch the Bobrza valley and the surrounding forests. The place pairs well with other industrial monuments of the Świętokrzyskie region.
