Kilińskiego 20, Szklarska Poręba
The Mineralogical Museum is located in Szklarska Poręba, in a region famous for centuries for its wealth of minerals and its mining and glassmaking traditions. Around 2,500 specimens have been gathered here — minerals, rocks and fossils from Poland and from all over the world, displayed in several thematic rooms.
The core of the exhibition consists of minerals from the Karkonosze and Izera Mountains, complemented by calcites and dripstones from Wojcieszów as well as ore specimens. A petrified Carboniferous forest, the Gibeon meteorite and a sizeable collection of dinosaur skeletons draw the most attention. A shop with stones, jewellery and collector's items operates at the museum.
A visit takes about an hour and works in any weather, so it is a good idea for a rainy day in the Karkonosze. The labels are accessible to children too, and they usually linger longest by the dinosaurs. From Szklarska Poręba it is easy to move on — to Szrenica or the Kamieńczyk waterfall.
