The Oldest Museum in the Opole Region

The District Museum in Nysa is the oldest museum institution in the Opole region. It collects mementoes of the former inhabitants of the Nysa area and promotes knowledge about the past of the town, which for centuries was the capital of the bishops’ duchy.

What to See

The exhibitions lead through the history of Nysa and its surroundings, show the everyday life and work of former residents and present collections of decorative arts, militaria, early printed books and manuscripts. The most valuable part is the gallery of European painting with works from the 15th to the 18th century, complemented by graphic art and sculpture. Seeing the full display takes about an hour and a half.

Good to Know

The museum also works as a cultural centre: it organises concerts, exhibition openings, meetings with authors, performances and museum lessons. It takes part in the European Heritage Days, the Night of Museums and the Nysa Science Festival.
