The Museum of Coins and Medals of John Paul II operates in Częstochowa, close to Jasna Góra, and gathers numismatic collections linked to the pontificate of the Polish pope. The collection is considered the largest of its kind in the world, more extensive than the Vatican holdings.
The display cases hold more than one and a half thousand coins bearing the image of John Paul II, arranged chronologically and by country of issue. Many come from Poland and the Vatican, and some were struck in only a few copies. The set of nearly six thousand medals is even richer, including the annual medals issued for successive anniversaries of the pontificate. A separate part consists of relics and personal mementoes: fragments of clothing and pilgrimage medallions.
It is a stop for pilgrims and for anyone interested in numismatics, easy to combine with a visit to the sanctuary. The museum also holds concerts and meetings devoted to the pope’s life and teaching.
