The Museum of the City of Łódź is housed in the monumental palace on Ogrodowa Street which in the 19th century belonged to Izrael Poznański, the industrialist known as the „king of cotton”. The building adjoins the Manufaktura complex and is itself one of the symbols of industrial Łódź.
The route leads through state, residential and utility rooms in which the eclecticism of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries mixes with Art Nouveau, neo-Baroque and oriental motifs. The interiors hold mementoes of the Poznański family, the Pantheon of Distinguished Citizens of Łódź and collections linked to Władysław Reymont, Julian Tuwim, Karl Dedecius and Marek Edelman. A separate gallery is devoted to the pianist Artur Rubinstein.
In the palace basement a Łódź backyard from the early 20th century has been reconstructed, with an exhibition on the mingling of Polish, German, Jewish and Russian cultures. The museum runs lessons for children and young people, concerts and lectures.
