Dom Tkacza (Weaver's House) - Historical Museum

A clothier's house in the Upper Suburb

Dom Tkacza is a branch of the Historical Museum in Bielsko-Biała, housed in a small townhouse in the Upper Suburb — a district settled by cloth makers since the 15th century. The building's weaving traditions reach back to the 17th century, and today it is one of the last testimonies to the craft past of the city.

What you will see inside

The exhibition recreates the flat of a master weaver and his workshop from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The living quarters comprise a kitchen, a bedroom and a formal room furnished with period household equipment. The workshop holds looms of various sizes, including a heddle loom for woollen fabrics, along with tools used to process yarn.

Good to know

A visit takes about an hour and works well in bad weather and with children, for whom the workshop is usually the most interesting part. The route also covers the guild office with its documents and the iron chest that served as the guild strongbox, a journeyman's room and a collection of woodcuts by Jan Wałach in the hallway.
