Forteczna 20, Wieś Żurawica
Fort XII Werner stands in Żurawica, a few kilometres north of Przemyśl, and belongs to the ring of the Przemyśl Fortress. It was built between 1882 and 1886 as a single-rampart artillery fort, and today it houses a private museum devoted to the history of the Austro-Hungarian fortifications of the Podkarpacie region.
The structures have survived in good condition: the gorge barracks, the ammunition shelter, the ready shelters, the poterne linking the main shelter with the moat and the counterscarp wall. The exhibition gathers documents, photographs, uniforms, military equipment and everyday objects used by soldiers during the First World War.
The fort can be explored on your own, and with prior booking also with a guide who recounts the defence of the fortress during the Great War. It works well as part of a tour around Przemyśl — the other forts of the ring lie within a short drive.
