The Video Game Console Museum in Karpacz was the first institution in the country devoted entirely to the history of home gaming consoles. It operates in the centre of the town at the foot of the Karkonosze Mountains, which makes it a good idea for a rainy afternoon between mountain trips.
The collection leads through successive generations of hardware: Atari, Commodore 64, Intellivision, Interton, Hanimex, Sega and the Pegasus, hugely popular in Poland. The first version of the PlayStation, with a CD drive and a cabled controller, is here as well. Alongside the consoles there are cartridges and accessories with titles such as Mario, Pac-Man, Galaga and Duck Hunt.
This is not a museum behind glass — a dozen or so stations let you play on original devices from decades ago. It is an attraction across generations: adults return to the games of their childhood, while children find out what entertainment looked like for their parents and grandparents. Set aside an hour for the visit.
