os. Centrum E 1, Nowa Huta, Kraków
The Nowa Huta Museum is a branch of the Museum of Cracow, based in the modernist building of the former „Światowid” cinema on the Centrum E estate. It tells the story of a district built as a flagship project of socialist realism and an attempt to create an ideal city.
The exhibition explains the urban planning behind Nowa Huta and shows how the district changed over the following decades. Photographs, prints and posters recreate everyday life on the estates. Among the exhibits are mementoes of the Lenin Steelworks and objects of daily use from the communist era, alongside works by Jacek Sroka, prints by Leszek Sobocki and sculptures by Krystyna and Jerzy Nowakowski.
An air-raid shelter survives in the basement, now home to the display „Atomic dread. Shelters in Nowa Huta”. The former cinema auditorium hosts temporary exhibitions, openings and educational classes, so the programme changes through the year. A visit takes roughly an hour.
