Mickiewicza, Jastarnia
The Fortification Open-Air Museum in Jastarnia covers the remains of an interwar defensive position — the only complex of modern heavy bunkers built on the Polish coast. It was meant to guard the narrow isthmus leading to Hel, but during the Second World War it played no combat role, as the fighting took place between Chałupy and Kuźnica.
The structures „Sokół”, „Sabała”, „Saratoga” and „Sęp” were secured and restored in 2005, and „Sabała” was opened to visitors. Inside it, an exhibition presents the construction and equipment of the fortifications; the exhibits may be touched and photographed. Around them survive trenches, barbed-wire entanglements, anti-tank obstacles and the foundations of unfinished bunkers.
The site is explored along two educational and historical trails. The shorter, yellow one starts at the car park next to „Sabała” and leads to the „Saratoga” and „Sęp” bunkers. The longer, red one takes in every structure. The walk through forest and dunes takes about an hour.
