Ogródek 5, Wieś Ogródek
The Michał Kajka Museum stands in Ogródek, a small village in the Pisz county west of Ełk. It occupies the poet's family home, a wooden building set in the landscape of a Masurian village. The museum is a branch of the Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński Museum in Pranie. Kajka is regarded as the leading figure of Masurian folk writing; he wrote in Polish at a time when the region belonged to East Prussia.
The exhibition follows the poet's biography and his everyday life. It gathers calendars, books and magazines he drew on, copies of his manuscripts, and carpentry tools — Kajka supported his family with manual work. The interior itself is a further attraction: old furniture, household equipment and decorative details showing the folk culture of Masuria around the turn of the twentieth century.
The museum runs museum lessons, workshops, author meetings and temporary exhibitions, so it works well when travelling with children. The visit is short and unaffected by the weather — a sensible stop on a route through Masuria, between Ełk and Pisz.
