The Museum of Cieszyn Silesia occupies the classicist Larisch Palace on Tadeusza Regera Street in Cieszyn, a few steps from the market square. Its roots go back to the collection of Father Leopold Jan Szersznik, one of the oldest public museum collections in this part of Europe. The institution documents the history and material culture of a region shaped by Polish, Czech, Austrian and German influences.
The permanent exhibition “At the crossroads of history and cultures” leads from prehistory through the Piast and noble periods and the industrial revolution of the late nineteenth century to the division of the town in 1920 and the war years. A second display, “Gothic and Renaissance art”, gathers painting and sculpture linked to the region from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century.
The museum offers lessons and workshops in ethnography, history, art and archaeology, and the interiors are accessible to wheelchairs. A visit combines naturally with a walk through Cieszyn's old town and Castle Hill.
