A Podhale cottage in Zakopane

This branch of the Tatra Museum on Droga do Rojów occupies the home of the Gąsienica-Sobczak highlander family, built in the traditional Podhale style at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is one of the few surviving buildings in town that show how people really lived in old Zakopane.

The white and the black room

Two front rooms are open to visitors. The white one holds the collection of Maria and Bronisław Dembowski: ceramics, paintings on glass, sculptures, folk costumes, spoon racks and decorated shepherds' utensils. The black one recreates an interior from the second half of the 19th century, based on drawings by Stanisław Witkiewicz and descriptions by Władysław Matlakowski.

Who it suits

Almost four hundred exhibits, most from the Tatra Museum's holdings, make up a compact display that can be seen in an hour. It is a good stop on a rainy day and a sensible addition to a family walk around Zakopane, especially before heading into the Tatras.
