Rynek 8, Trzebnica
The Regional Museum in Trzebnica occupies the building of the former town hall on the market square, in the centre of a town known above all for the Basilica of St Hedwig. Earlier the institution was housed in the seventeenth-century House under the Golden Sun, the only building in its frontage to survive the wartime destruction.
The exhibitions gather mementoes of former residents of Trzebnica and records of important events in the history of the town and its surroundings. Visitors see photographs, documents, old and modern town plans, postcards from the early twentieth century, and objects ranging from the Middle Ages to modern times, including thirteenth-century pilgrim flasks.
A separate and best-known part of the display is devoted to the discoveries of Dr Jan Burdukiewicz at Winna Góra, where traces of Homo erectus dating back some 500,000 years were found. These are the oldest known evidence of the species in Polish lands, which makes Trzebnica an important point on the country's archaeological map.
