A museum at the foot of the Karkonosze

The Museum of Sport and Tourism occupies a building in the centre of Karpacz, a few minutes from the trails leading up to Śnieżka. It brings together two threads: the history of tourism in the Karkonosze and the achievements of Polish sport.

What to see

The displays show how the mountain trails were laid out, what tools their builders used and how early tourists travelled – sedan chairs and hired guides included. A separate section is devoted to winter sports and Olympians: skis, bobsleighs, climbing gear and a collection of Olympic medals from 1928–2008, complemented by a medal from the first modern Games and Olympic torches.

Good to know

Part of the exhibition deals with nature conservation in the Karkonosze National Park, with specimens of local fauna and flora. A visit takes about an hour, and the museum is a good idea for a day of bad weather, when the peaks disappear into cloud.

  • Paid municipal car parks nearby
