Ołowianka 9-13, Gdańsk
Spichlerze na Ołowiance are three historic granaries on an island in the Motława, opposite Gdańsk's Long Embankment. They house the main exhibition of the National Maritime Museum, telling the story of seafaring, shipbuilding and marine art. A footbridge links the island with the rest of the Old Town, so a visit combines easily with a walk along the waterfront.
The displays run from archaeological finds recovered from Baltic wrecks, through models of shipyards and ports, to mementoes of people of the sea. A separate attraction is the collection of sailing-ship and warship models, among them the MS Batory, ORP Orzeł and the Vasa. The Marine Gallery holds Poland's largest collection of marine painting, with works by Dutch and Flemish artists.
The complex is part of a larger museum ensemble spread along both banks of the Motława, so it is worth setting aside more time than for a single exhibition. The displays are indoors and accessible to wheelchairs. The historic centre is best reached on foot.
