The only museum of its kind in Poland

The Phillumeny Museum stands on Mały Rynek square in Bystrzyca Kłodzka, in a former Protestant church and parish school. It is the country's only institution devoted to the history of fire – from the earliest ways of striking a spark to matches and lighters.

The collection

The display leads visitors from flint and tinder, through nineteenth-century petrol and gas lighters, to modern match production. A special part of the collection are the matchbox labels shown in the „Enchanted World of Matches” gallery; the museum works with match manufacturers from Poland and across Europe.

Beyond fire

The building also houses a regional section on the history and monuments of Bystrzyca Kłodzka and an exhibition of satirical drawings by Andrzej Mleczko. Schools are offered museum lessons and workshops, including the travelling „Flying Museum” programme. A visit takes about an hour.
