ul. Ks. Szafranka 9, Katowice
The Museum of Katowice History occupies a historic townhouse on Ksiądz Szafranek Street in the very centre of the city, minutes from the market square. It tells the story of Katowice — from medieval settlements and ironworking traditions, through the granting of town rights in 1865, to its transformation into one of Poland's main industrial centres.
The display “From the History of Katowice” combines maps, archival documents, old photographs and postcards with multimedia cases and applications. A second permanent exhibition shows bourgeois interiors of around 1900 — drawing rooms, ballrooms, furniture and artworks of wealthy residents. The museum also mounts temporary shows and cultural events: concerts, openings and lectures.
A good choice in Katowice in poor weather and for anyone curious about the industrial past of Upper Silesia. The visit pairs easily with a walk through the centre and a trip to the Nikiszowiec estate. Touring takes roughly an hour.
