The House of Carl and Gerhart Hauptmann stands on 11 Listopada Street in Szklarska Poręba, in the Lower Silesian part of the Karkonosze. In the late nineteenth century the Hauptmann brothers settled here and turned the villa into a centre of artistic life that drew visitors from all over Europe.
Gerhart Hauptmann received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1912 and wrote much of his work in this house. His elder brother Carl was the author of „The Book of the Mountain Spirit”, a tale of the legendary ruler of the Karkonosze. Permanent exhibitions introduce both figures and the post-war fate of the building.
The institution also presents the artists' colonies of the Karkonosze and the cultural life of Szklarska Poręba; it belongs to the „EUROArt” federation. Open-air painting sessions, children's workshops, dramatised guided tours and a literary walk in the brothers' footsteps are held here. A visit takes about an hour.
