Jagiellońska 18b, Zakopane
The Władysław Hasior Gallery operates on Jagiellońska Street in Zakopane, east of the town centre, as a branch of the Tatra Museum. It occupies the building of the former „leżakownia”, where the artist lived and worked for years. It is one of the few places in Poland devoted entirely to a single contemporary artist.
The collection comprises around 150 works: sculptures made of found and discarded materials, spatial compositions and the famous banners. Hasior gave them perverse, often witty titles that form an integral part of each piece. The themes revolve around the culture, faith, history and nature of the Podhale region. The artist bequeathed the collection to the Tatra Museum.
A visit takes about an hour and is possible regardless of the weather, which makes the gallery a good idea for a rainy day in Zakopane. A Sculpture Park dedicated to the artist's memory is being created next to the building. The gallery also hosts cultural events, including the Alternative Art Festival.
