Wolności 13e, Rydzyna
The Józef windmill stands on Wolności Street in Rydzyna, Leszno county. It was built in the second half of the 19th century and was one of several dozen mills then working on the nearby Młyńska Góra hill. Today the building belongs to the Museum of Milling and Agriculture in Osieczna.
Little of the original structure survived, so in 1983 the mill was reconstructed using parts of two machines from Młyńska Góra; further repairs followed in later years. The result is regarded as one of the finest windmills in the country – a slender body with four sails that stands out in the small-town landscape.
The interior is open to visitors: the drive and grinding mechanism is on show, and the display explains how the mill was turned into the wind and what a miller's work looked like. Old tools and everyday objects complete the exhibition.
