A museum in a former gymnasium

The Museum of Stefan Żeromski's School Years operates in Kielce, at the foot of Castle Hill, in the building of the former Government Boys' Gymnasium that the future writer attended. It is a branch of the National Museum in Kielce.

The exhibition

The first room gathers family mementoes and objects linked to Żeromski's childhood; the second holds records of his gymnasium years and of his later literary work: documents, photographs and editions of his books. Together they trace how his Kielce experiences returned in the pages of „The Labours of Sisyphus”.

The old classroom and classes

The strongest impression is made by the reconstructed classroom from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries: abacuses, wooden satchels, a blackboard on a stand, a brass bell and a pupil's uniform. The museum runs museum lessons and educational activities, also for groups of visitors with disabilities.
