The Museum of the History of the Augustów Canal occupies a listed 19th-century manor house on 29 Listopada Street in Augustów, which once housed the harbour master's office. The institution is a branch of the Museum of the Augustów Region and tells the story of one of the most interesting waterways in Europe.
The display brings together documents, plans, photographs and objects connected with the construction and operation of the canal – from the work of its engineers to the daily life of raftsmen and sailors. A separate section is devoted to Ignacy Prądzyński, the officer and engineer regarded as the main author of the project.
In the museum grounds stands the stern of an old vessel, inside which films about the waterway and about John Paul II's cruise along the canal are shown. A visit combines well with a walk along the Netta and a trip to the locks around Augustów.
