Zachęta occupies a building on Małachowskiego Square in the very centre of Warsaw, a few minutes' walk from the Saxon Garden and Krakowskie Przedmieście. It is one of Poland's most important institutions showing 20th- and 21st-century art — by established figures and newcomers alike.
The collection includes works by Tadeusz Kantor, Edward Krasiński, Mirosław Bałka, Zbigniew Libera, Katarzyna Kozyra, Wojciech Bąkowski, Anita Grzeszykowska and Julita Wójcik, among others. The programme, however, rests above all on temporary exhibitions — painting, sculpture, photography and media art — which change several times a year.
The gallery runs workshops for children and young people on building exhibitions and on artistic techniques, and it also hosts literary evenings, film screenings and debates. The building is wheelchair accessible. Given the central location it is best reached by public transport — parking a motorhome here is difficult.
