The Elbląg Canal History Centre sits in Buczyniec, right next to the inclined plane of the same name — one of the devices that carry vessels overland on the waterway from Ostróda to Elbląg. The exhibition explains how this unique hydro-engineering system works and where its old name, the Oberland Canal, came from.
Two floors hold the display and an education room with parts of the mechanisms that control the locks and inclined planes. A separate section is devoted to Georg Jacob Steenke, the canal's chief builder. Visitors can also watch a documentary film and learn about the nature surrounding the waterway, which runs through the lakes and canals of the Iława Lake District.
A visit takes about an hour and combines well with a walk along the inclined plane or a boat trip. There is an education corner for the youngest guests, and the canal's engineering has long drawn engineers and historians of hydraulic construction.
