Amber Museum „Bursztynowa Komnata” (Amber Room)

A private amber collection in Stegna

The „Bursztynowa Komnata” Amber Museum is the first private institution in Poland devoted entirely to Baltic amber. It occupies a reconstructed arcaded house of the Żuławy region, a building type typical of this landscape, so the house itself forms part of the display. The museum stands in Stegna, a few kilometres from the sea, on the route running along the Vistula Spit.

What to see

The core of the collection consists of specimens with inclusions, that is insects and fragments of plants trapped in the resin. The exhibition explains how fossil resin is formed, how it is extracted and how to tell a genuine piece from an imitation. A separate thread covers amber working as a craft: the tools, the successive stages of processing and the finished pieces. The museum's name refers to the lost Amber Room, whose story is part of the narrative.

Who it suits

The visit is short and guided by enthusiasts, which makes it a good choice with children and a plan for a rainy day at the seaside. A workshop and a shop with natural amber jewellery operate next to the museum.
