The Zgierz Town Museum stands on General Dąbrowski Street, a few steps from the square in the town centre. Its holdings — some five thousand objects — tell the history of Zgierz, whose growth from the 19th century onwards was driven by the textile industry, and the lives of its inhabitants.
The most striking item is a large scale model recreating Zgierz of the mid-19th century in meticulous detail. Also compelling is the reconstruction of a factory counting house of that era, with manufacturers' documents, a safe and period furniture. Among the figures recalled in the display is Jan Świercz, interwar mayor and later president of the town.
A visit takes about an hour and works in any weather, children included. The museum runs several dozen educational activities for children and teenagers devoted to the town and the region, and the building is wheelchair accessible.
