The Emigration Museum in Gdynia occupies the building of the former Maritime Station on the French Quay, the very place from which passenger liners sailed across the ocean for decades. It is the first institution in Poland devoted entirely to emigration from Polish lands, treating the subject over the last two hundred years.
The permanent display is multimedia based and leads through successive waves of emigration: the reasons for leaving, the conditions of the sea voyage, the first years abroad and the fate of later generations. Recreated interiors, models and recorded accounts build a story about the daily life of an emigrant rather than about statistics alone. A separate place is given to the voices of contemporary Poles living abroad, gathered in a sound installation.
The museum stands right by the port, close to Kościuszko Square and the seaside boulevards, so a visit is easy to combine with a walk through the centre of Gdynia. The building is adapted for visitors using a pushchair or wheelchair.
