Markowa 1487, Wieś Markowa
The Ulma Family Museum of Poles Saving Jews stands in Markowa near Łańcut, the village where in 1944 the Germans murdered Józef and Wiktoria Ulma together with their children and the Jews they were hiding. It was created as the first museum in the country devoted entirely to this subject.
The visit is built around documents, photographs and objects connected with the Jews of the Subcarpathian region and with the people who helped them. Its central element is the symbolic setting of the Ulma house, around which the narrative about the price paid for saving neighbours is constructed. The architecture of the building itself, a severe form of concrete and glass, is part of the message, as is the surrounding memorial garden with plaques bearing names.
The museum runs workshops and educational projects, among others for teachers. The visit calls for concentration and, because of the difficult subject, can be demanding for the youngest children. The building is accessible to wheelchair users.
